Entfernung von der Erde: ÷ 15.000.000 Lichtjahre / 4,6 MparsecsBei M 51 handelt es sich um ein Paar von Spiralgalaxien, deren Form durch die gegenseitige Anziehungskraft entsteht. Dies wird aber nur in großen Teleskopen sichtbar. NGC 5194 ist die größere Galaxie und wiegt ungefähr 100 Milliarden mal soviel wie die Sonne. Sie ist etwa dreimal größer als ihre Begleitgalaxie, NGC 5195.
